FISH TOWN Philly’s New Swinging Rage
By Stu Leventhal
Within a 10- 15 minute walking distance of Center City Philadelphia is a neighborhood that has been reinventing itself over the past few years, Fish Town! Worthy of investigating on a weekend stroll, you will find trendy art shops like Circle Thrift featuring quality vintage clothes, housewares, furniture, books and unique toys. There are plenty of fun places to grab a quick beer or a bite. I recommend, Kraftwork at 541 E Girard for the worldly connoisseur of draft beer. Kraftwork offers 25 uniquely different flavored drafts from all over the globe.
Loco Pez has plenty of specialty low cost tacos. Nash down on one of their huge helpings of nacho. And, where else can you find a selection of 36 different sipping tequilas?
Fish Town truly is the place to orchestrate an enjoyable pub crawl. Does anything sound more fun than Barcade, a bar-arcade featuring more than 36 arcade games that still cost only 25 cents! And the beer list and menu are both extensive! If the weather is nice you’ll enjoy chilling in the cozy outdoor area where locals and tourists mingle.
If you dig cutting edge music; indie, hip hop, puck, soul and even some hard edgy rock then you won’t want to miss Kung Fu Neck Tie located at 1250 N front street, under the El train. Kung Fu Neck tie features shows by all the hottest local bands as well as top eclectic touring performers.
All in all, Fish Town is a friendly neighborhood that is great for tourists to walk, talk, schmooze and get to know Philly’s in crowd. On a nice day, hang out at Penn Treaty Park where there’s always something going on; musicians, street performers, arts and craft fairs, political gathering or some other special events. Then head over to Steven Starr’s Frankford Hall for an authentic German theme lunch. Order then play some ping pong while your meal cooks.
There is so much fun stuff to do in Fish Town and neat places to visit you will find yourself coming back again and again. If you dig original, live, alternative theater, you will want to stay tuned for the up and coming performances at the Walking Fish Theater located at 2509 Frankford Ave. Walking Fish Theater features a fantastic, talented sketch comedy group that performs adult as well as family shows.
So Philadelphia, let’s skip the trip to the shore this weekend and head on over to the new and improved Fish Town. I promise you, you’ll have so much fun you’ll be coming back again and again and dragging your friends too.
