Fish fats may boost breast cancer drug Tamoxifen

As we know Green Living is a life style. Green Living is about the environment we live in, the organic and sustainable food we eat. Leading a healthier life and educating ourselves via keeping on top of the latest medical news are of course a huge part of it.

We have a deep connection with Vital Choice Seafood and Organics, and they remain our pulse on  medical research/ studies and consumption of fish.

We just read some intriguing news in their monthly newsletter.

Many women in the San Francisco Bay Area and around the world will want to know about a study showing that a diet high in omega-3 fish oil enhanced the benefits of cancer drug tamoxifen in mice with breast cancer.

San Francisco Green Living column readers and San Francisco residents can subscribe to the newsletter and enjoy organic treats and wild seafood delivered directly to their doors.

The drug tamoxifen, derived from the yew tree, reduces estrogen’s ability to promote cancer growth in breast cells.

Now, researchers at Philadelphia’s Fox Chase Cancer Center report a new animal study showing that omega-3 fatty acids from seafood could enhance tamoxifen therapy.

Mice given a diet high in fish oil showed greater expression of genes related to cellular “differentiation” – a sign of lower cancer severity – compared with a diet high in corn oil.

The combination of fish oil and tamoxifen also reduced the expression of genes linked to tumor growth and spread.

According to lead author Jose Russo, M.D., “If a tumor was being treated with tamoxifen, the addition of an omega-3 fatty acid diet seemed to make the tumor, at least at the molecular level, more benign and less aggressive and responsive to tamoxifen.”

The fish oil diet also boosted the expression of genes related to immune defenses against tumors, more than the corn oil diet.

Dr. Russo’s team will be testing whether omega-3s can prevent breast cancer in animals, and will then test them in women.

After reading this research we reached out to our San Francisco Bay Area medical expert Dr Joseph Habis, Medical Director and Co-founder of Prima Medical Group (in Marin and Sonoma counties) and this is what he has to say:
"Fish oils are proving to  have a significant benefit to many aspects of one's health. Research has already provided strong evidence to reveal the benefit with specific fish oils to heart health, but newer evidence is compelling for its benefit in cancer prevention and treatment. A new study, looking at fish oils and their value to enhance an anti-cancer treatment (Tamoxifen) may ultimately open
a field looking at its use to prevent many types of cancers, and in conjunction for treatment with chemotherapeutic agents".
