Natomas has been without a fish and chips restaurant for three years. That was when Tugboat fish and chips went out of business, leaving everyone in the area without their favorite British style eatery. Tugboat did not stay long at its Town Center in Creekside location and it did not win any prizes in the Yelp review wars. The idea of pot stickers being thrown into the mix may have been off-putting. This is a serious matter, because the nearest fish and chips eatery of merit is all the way over in Arden Arcade at Cottage Way. Otherwise, the population must be satisfied with H. Salt Esquire near Watt Avenue. So it is good news that 007 Fish and Chips is on the way with an estimated opening date in late November. A visit to the 007 Fish and Chips website on Oct 21 revealed a contact number that is not working and a map indicating the restaurant will be at the Gateway Promenade in Natomas.
The restaurant plans to offer some innovative new industry standards, including cooking in avocado oil. This is supposed to create a robust flavor and to reduce fat by 30 percent. The good news for the rising number of people who have developed an intolerance to gluten is that the customers can request gluten free batter.
This restaurant will offer a full bore British culinary experience. The menu is also packed with traditional British fare, including bangers and mash and a traditional English breakfast. There will be curry, mushy peas, classic gravy and vegetarian gravy. And then, we will have the fish.
Fish selections will include cod and haddock, but the menu is heavier on sausages, meat and vegetarian savory pies and such classics as beans on toast.
One great disappointment is the missing items that Californian's expect in their fish and chips selection. We like scallops, shrimps and clams too, but they seem to be missing from the menu.
According to an Oct. 9 Natomas Buzz article, 007 Fish and Chips management is waiting for permit approval and has applied for an alcohol license. It will be a relief to have the fare in the area again.
