The Philippine Ministry at Christ the Redeemer gathered together in the parish library to offer a surprise birthday cake to Fr. Patrick Cogan, SA on February 16th after the 10 AM Mass. The Philippine Ministry was especially grateful for Fr. Patrick's support for the Simbang Gabi celebration, a Filipino novena mass during the last days of Advent. The final night's mass and celebration was held at Christ the Redeemer with Bishop Paul S. Loverde as celebrant.

Fr. Patrick's birthday actually came a few days later than this birthday celebration. The celebration also marked the first year of pastoring for Fr. Patrick at Christ the Redeemer. This first milestone was just a few days before the celebration. The cake was a special Filipino confection featuring ube jam filling with young coconut. Ube is a vibrant purple yam popular for desserts in Philippines. A more traditional ube cake was also offered in which the yam was mixed with sugar to make a thick and tasty purple paste. The color foreshadowed the coming Lenten season and all in attendance shared the joy for this year and the seasons to come.
