First weekend of state basketball finals ends

The opening weekend of the Illinois state basketball finals ended on Saturday with the girls basketball Class 1A and 2A championship games. Class 1A saw Freeport Aquin beat Mt. Pulaski 55-46 while in the third-place game, Annawan defeated Cowden-Herrick 47-37. The story of the weekend in Class 1A though had to be two players.

Freeport Aquin got one of the most dominating state championship game performances ever by Sophie Brunner. Brunner scored 33 points while pulling down 12 rebounds after scoring 21 points and having 12 rebounds the day before. There have not been many weekends like Brunner's ever in the state championships. Then there is Micah Jones from Cowden-Herrick, who had 21 more rebounds as her team lost for the second straight day. Jones basically didn't have any help at all over the two games where she finished with 39 points and 42 rebounds. When this weekend is remembered in history, it is going to all about Jones and Brunner.

The Class 2A weekend wasn't as exciting with Nashville beating St. Thomas More 42-29 in the title game while El Paso-Gridley defeated Walther Lutheran 55-46 in the third-place game. Erica Brown led Nashville with 14 points in their title game victory while Codee Schliff had 18 points to lead El Paso-Gridley in the third-place game. It will be the Class 3A and 4A title games next weekend which should bring a ton of excitement and interest from fans in the Chicago area.
