The first week's sales figures from the Beatles' emergence on iTunes are out. An Apple Computer spokesman told us 450,000 albums and 2 million songs were sold worldwide.
And maybe not surprisingly, "Abbey Road" was the hottest album. But it wasn't a Lennon-McCartney song that was the most popular individually. It was the George Harrison song "Here Comes the Sun," according to Apple Computer.
Meanwhile, we made an informal phone check of a few walk-in record stores to ask if in-store sales had been affected either way by the iTunes. A few didn't know or didn't want to go on record, but at least for one store, things have been getting better. An Amoeba Records staffer in Hollywood said Beatles records have been selling well since the iTunes introduction, especially Beatles on vinyl. "We're selling out of it, like a lot," he said.
Currently, "Abbey Road" is still the most popular album at #15. Also in the albums top 40 are "The Beatles (White Album) at #26, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" (#31), "1967-1970" (#34) and "1962-1966" at #37.
While a number of albums are still showing in the ranks, things have slowed down considerably from earlier in the week on the most popular songs. There is no Beatle track among the top 50 most popular songs. "Here Comes the Sun" is at #70 today.
