Does vaccine overuse cause germs to mutate, similiar to the way antibiotic overuse creates antibiotic resistance? Researchers in other countries have found evidence that circulating strains of Bordetella pertussis (whooping cough) have adapted to the acellular vaccine. Yesterday, researchers reported similar findings for the first time in kids in the United States.
Many countries switched from the whole-cell pertussis vaccine to the acellular version in the late 1990s because of a high rate of side effects in the whole-cell vaccine. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has said that pertussis cases are at their highest point since 1955. Efforts in the US are underway to explore the rise in pertussis cases, assess the disease's burden, and examine possible problems with the vaccine, according to expert presentations before the National Vaccine Advisory Committee, the group that advises the US Department of Health and Human Services.
The current spike has led health officials around the country to look into why so many cases are suddenly occurring. One of the theories floating around is that there are problems with the vaccine. The children of parents who opt out of vaccines are not generally affected by the yearly, consistent rising number of Pertussis cases. Washington state; for instance, has one of the highest vaccine exemption rates in the country, but CDC officials have said that most of the children who have come down with whooping cough were vaccinated.
