John Isenberg and Iron Mountain Racing teammates Dan Watt, Oliver Andrews, and Kacee Callahan are in their fourth day running the ALCAN 5000, a timing and endurance race from Kirkland, WA, to Anchorage, AK. John sent me this update, which I'll just insert here verbatim.
"We are currently in Watson Lake, Yukon.
"The team is currently in 3rd place and we are confident this will improve.
"Oliver and KC are doing well and are currently sitting 5th overall and are only a few points from a top 3.
"I had a tough first day having made an error programing my rally computer. I finished day 1 in last place. I've done well to recover and had a 2nd overall score on the first test today. Things seem to be back on track.
"Dan is also doing well in spite of the fact that he not using anything other than an odometer and stopwatch. He's had a couple navigation errors that have hurt him but his timekeeping is very good.
"All in all the team is having a great rally and we are looking forward to the upcoming day.
"All equipment is good and so far the team has not been faced with any mechanical issues.
"Weather has been all over the map. Very warm in the southern sections and today brought the first real rain. We expect to see more challenging weather in the days to come.
"I'm amazed at how wild this part of the world still is. We saw moose, mountain goats, and even a couple large herds of buffalo.
"A couple interesting things so far... Was actually penalized 5% for having US currency at one gas stop. Late in the day we paid almost $8 a gallon for fuel.
"More tomorrow when we get to Whitehorse. Will try to call and check in."
I hope to be speaking with John soon and will be back with more updates.

Wonder if that's $8 US dollars? Wow!

I'm guessing at the very least they will be converting their US$ to Canadian$. It does sound like an adventure, though.
