Anti-technology terrorists, artificial intelligence, singularities; there's no shortage of ambition in Wally Pfister's directorial debut, Transcendence. Keeping with the spirit of his longtime collaborator Christopher Nolan, Pfister is hoping to take a lot of heady concepts and merge them into what will hopefully be enjoyable popcorn entertainment, not unlike Nolan's Inception or his upcoming Interstellar. At a time when science-fiction is being represented by some truly great films by today's top directors, is Transcendence the next to join the list?
The first teaser has been revealed this busy trailer-heavy day, and....well, it'll be interesting to see the reaction of those attending Anchorman 2. Johnny Depp delivers the brainy voice-over as Dr. Will Caster, who may have broken the limits of artificial intelligence, putting him at odds with anti-terrorist extremists and those closest to him who think he may be on a dangerous path. Cool idea, but probably not the trailer for reeling in a wide swath of audience.
Co-starring Rebecca Hall, Kate Mara, Paul Bettany, Morgan Freeman and Cillian Murphy, Transcendence opens April 18th 2014.
