On the eve of the beginning of the MAC baseball tournament, RedHawks firstbaseman Kyle Weldon and pitcher Mac Thoreson were both named to the All-MAC First Team. It is the first time in two years that any Miami player has landed on the First Team.
Weldon led the team this season with nine home runs and was tied for the most RBIs with 47. He batted .309 (68-for-220), with a .338 OBP% and .500 SLG%. His numbers also included 11 doubles and two triples, allowing him to score 34 runs this year.
Thoreson was arguably Miami's most reliable workhorse on the mound this season, pitching a team-high 92 innings in 14 starts. Though his record was a modest 5-3, his ERA of 1.86 was incredibly impressive and second best in the conference amongst qualified starting pitchers. He was the only RedHawk to pitch a complete game this season, and racked up 65 strikeouts, second-most on the team.
As the #3 seed in this year's tournament, the RedHawks (32-24, 18-9) will face #6 Toledo (26-27, 15-12) in the opening round Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. in Chillicothe. This will be the first meeting of the year between the 'Hawks and Rockets, as these two teams have not met since last year's tournament. That meeting was also in the opening round, a game that Toledo won 7-1. Coincidently, Thoreson was Miami's pitcher in that game. Can you say, "payback?"
