Rockford’s high Thursday hit 81 degrees; however Friday will be some 5 to 10 degrees cooler than Thursday, and almost 30 degrees cooler than the rare-late season heat we had earlier in the week. Friday afternoon’s high will be the coolest and first sub-70 degree high since late July. Brisk northeast winds around a strong high pressure to our north will usher in our first taste of autumn in the Northern Illinois area. Overnight lows tonight could be the coldest since early June – nearly 3 months ago! Coldest spots tonight could dip into the middle 40s.
Temperatures look to remain below normal through the weekend and early next week. Saturday looks absolutely gorgeous, but cool with light winds, clear skies, and temperatures in the low/mid 70s. Sunday looks to be very cloudy, cool, and rainy. Showers and thunderstorms look to affect most of the area early Sunday and throughout the day. Any rain will be welcomed as Rockford has seen only 2 days of measurable precipitation through the first 13 days of September, totaling 0.07 inches, far below the normal and what is needed to abate the dry conditions that have plagued much of the region since July.
The start of next week looks a little cool, but dry. However, the second half of the week looks to warmer with temperatures near or exceeding 80 with slight chances of rain starting on Wednesday. This is all ahead of another big cool down for next weekend as temperatures might not make it out of the 60s for highs again with north winds off Lake Michigan.
