January 19, 2012

The trough is moving in and clouds have overtaken the Bay area. Rain has been reported as far south as the San Jose area, with heavier precipitation falling over Northern California currently. This is the first rainfall in 2012 for San Francisco, San Jose, and Oakland. In the case of San Francisco, this is the first time the airport has reported rainfall in 30 days; 19 days for San Jose and Oakland airports according to the National Weather Service Monterey’s climate database. A quarter of an inch of rainfall is forecasted to fall across the area through Friday morning. The latest NAM and GFS weather forecast models are forecasting heavier rain for this evening, briefly tapering to scattered showers and drizzle overnight, then heavier rain redeveloping Saturday morning and continuing through the day. Rain tapers to light showers Sunday morning, with some clearing in the afternoon-just in time for the 49ers to take on the New York Giants at Candlestick park. However, a band of showers should move in later Sunday, which could hamper niner fans as they leave the game Sunday. The good news is that the precipitation forecasted to fall should be light in nature.

Good news for skiers? The good news associated with this system is that the mountains in the Lake Tahoe ski resort region could pick up a couple of feet of snow. Yes that’s right folks SNOW- something that has been lacking from this winter. The National Weather Service has issued a number of winter storm warnings for the mountain region. Needless to say, the snow drought is finally over for the Tahoe region, and this meteorologist is planning on hitting up the slopes next week as snow continues to be in the forecast for the region as a series of weather systems impact the area for the next week. The weather pattern has finally shifted as the jet stream has moved a bit south, bringing the big weather making systems into northern California.
