FIRST QUARTER UPDATE: Spartans 3, Trojans 0

Everyone at the coliseum was on the edge of their seats in anticipation of Matt Barkley’s first snap as USC’s starting quarterback. Unfortunately, they had to wait an agonizing minute as the Trojans were flagged for a false start before Barkley could make his move.

Barkley finally got his first play off, a handoff to dynamic running back, Joe McKnight, who broke out for a 22-yard gain on the play.

Barkley completed his first pass of the game, a pass thrown behind the tight end for a loss of two yards.

The first quarter was back-and-forth between the Spartans and Trojans. USC defensive end, Wes Horton, recovered a fumble by Spartans quarterback Kyle Reed. Unfortunately, the Trojans could not do much with the turnover as Joe McKnight promptly coughed up the ball on a running play up the middle. The fumble was recovered by Spartans defensive end Carl Ihenacho.

San Jose State linebacker, Mohamed Marah, gave Matt Barkley his first “welcome to college football” moment midway through the first quarter by getting into the backfield and sacking the true freshman quarterback.

The Spartans drew first blood. San Jose State converted on fourth down to extend its drive and Tyler Cope connected on a 41-yard field to put the Spartans on the board 3-0.

The Trojans turnover woes continued later in the first after Anthony McCoy fumbled on a short pass from Matt Barkley, giving the Spartans their second takeaway of the game.
