First pet food recall announced by Natura in over two decades

Natura has enjoyed 21 years of no pet food recalls until now. Yesterday, March 18, the company announced a voluntary recall of specific lots of dry pet food because the lots have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

In their online notice to their customers, the company explained:

“As pet parents and dedicated pet health advocates, it pains us to inform you of the first recall in our company's 21-year history.

During a recent random sampling, the FDA confirmed the presence of salmonella in one of our products. We take this extremely seriously, because your pets are like ours – they're part of the family – and we aren't taking any chances. As a result, we have voluntarily recalled a number of our products as a precautionary measure. Fortunately, there have been no reported animal or human health issues associated with these products, and we have confirmed that this is not a widespread issue.”

The company said that the products were made in a single production facility during a two week window in December, 2012. Routine testing by the Michigan Department of Agriculture collected from a single retail location tested positive for the presence of Salmonella. As a precautionary measure, Natura is voluntarily recalling all products from this production window.

Symptoms of Salmonella poisoning in pets

Pets with Salmonella infections may have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. The pet may appear lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea. They may also vomit.

Please note that infected but healthy pets can infect other animals or people if they are left untreated. Therefore, if your pet was fed a product on the recall list and is showing symptoms noted above, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Contact Natura if you have a product on their recall list

If you do have a product included on the recall list, the company urges you to please contact them. Contact details can be found here.
