Fall is approaching, and with it, new entertainment for hungry viewers. The animation realm is keeping busy as Cartoon Network has dropped hints and previews at Comic Con 2013 regarding the debut of their new original series. The fall lineup this year will introduce ‘Steven Universe’, ‘Clarence’ and ‘Uncle Grandpa’ alongside the usual continuing series.
‘Steven Universe’, created by Rebecca Sugar, will follow the adventures of the Crystal Gems, a group of heroes made up of three superpowered ladies and a less-than-super boy named Steven. All four have magical gemstones on their bodies as the source of their power, but Steven’s powers are yet to manifest. The show’s art boasts creative character designs and promises plenty of strange sights and quirky humor in the future.
While Steven and friends are busy fighting evil, ‘Clarence’ follows the life of the awkward new kid in school. Armed with an unusual personality and blithe enthusiasm, Clarence seeks to befriend the students of his new school with amusingly mixed results. This new series by ‘Adventure Time’ storyboard artist Skyler Page will focus on Clarence and his optimistic love of doing everything because "everything is amazing."
Finally, rounding out the new releases is Peter Browngardt’s ‘Uncle Grandpa’. A short of the new cartoon was featured on 'Geek Week' 2013 and guarantees unabashed nonsense. Uncle Grandpa, the series’ main character, will encounter things with levels of weirdness second only to his own. The insanity of the writing is complemented by a surreal art style occasionally blended with photographic elements.
Cartoon Network continues to be an animation powerhouse with these three new series in tow and a host of successful continuing shows, including ‘Adventure Time’ and ‘Regular Show’. Audiences will have plenty of new entertainment to look forward to once the new season begins.
