First par 5 hole at Joe Louis Golf Course is 544 yards (Photos)

The first, par five hole at Joe Louis Golf Course is the fifth hole, and the distance from the rear, blue tee markers to the putting green is 544 yards. The distance from the middle, white tee markers is 506 yards. The distance from the front, red tee markers is 399 yards. This hole has a #15, course hole handicap. (Joe Louis Golf Course is at 13100 S. Halsted Street in Riverdale, Ill.)

The fifth hole is the northernmost hole. From within 100 yards of the blue and white teeing grounds, the fairway is narrow. At approximately 150 yards from the blue and white teeing grounds, the fairway becomes wider. This width increase applies until approximately 120 yards from the putting green. For most of its length, the fairway is straight; only at 120 yards from the putting green does the fairway have a slight right dogleg. Moderately high trees are on the right side; and their line extends all the way to the putting green. These trees are closer to the right side’s, out-of-bounds fence than they are to the fairway.

This hole has three sand bunkers. The large sand bunker on the fairway’s, right side is the largest on this course. This bunker’s length begins at approximately 175 yards from the putting green, and it stretches toward the putting green for at least 25 yards. The other, two bunkers are on the putting green’s, left side. These are small bunkers—one slightly in front of the green and one that is even with the green’s middle.

Even if their drives were 260 yards, it is rarely possible for golfers to fly over this sand bunker with their second shots. (They will have 284 yards-246 yards to the putting green.) Therefore, golfers should play short of the bunker with their second shots, and fly over it with their third strokes. (The bunker’s length ends where the right dogleg angle begins.)

The putting green has an irregular shape; it is wider in the rear than it is in the front. It has a moderate size. Its slopes and breaks are of moderate difficulty.
