The CW's Supernatural has taken on a lot of fantastical creatures, and the show has even dove into the idea that famous movie characters were real (remember Dracula?), but never before have those characters actually been real. But it's season nine now, and in order to keep Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) on their toes (and maybe have at least one of them utter a "Now I have seen everything!"), the show is introducing one very special movie character come to life: Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz.
"We find out that Dorothy has kind of been trapped in the Men of Letters bunker for a long, long, long time, and accidentally she's set free, but so is the witch, so now we have them running around our bunker and we have to employ the help of the coolest computer nerd we know to figure out what happened and more details on it," Padalecki said of "Slumber Party" when LA TV Insider Examiner visited with the boys on set in Vancouver.
And that's right: "coolest computer nerd" means the return of Charlie (Felicia Day) to aid the boys who may be a little shell-shocked momentarily but then kick it quickly into their usual "Cool, crazy, how can we fix it?" mode.
The network summary for the episode entitled "Slumber Party" says Sam and Dean discover that the table in the Men of Letters house (the one that lit up like a Christmas Tree when the angels fell), has an ancient computer attached to it. They figure if they can get the computer on, they can track the angels. Who better to call for help than the best IT girl there is, Charlie? While moving the massive computer, they dislodge a hidden hexbag that unleashes a magical green-webbed wall. Sam and Dean break through it and discover the one and only Dorothy (guest star Tiio Horn) from Oz. She had trapped herself and the wicked witch (guest star Maya Massar) in the web years ago to stop the witch from finding the key that would open the gate that connected their world with Oz. With the wall broken, a massive and magical fight ensues that threatens to destroy the Men of Letters house.
"Dean tries to battle with the fact that there's an actual Wizard of Oz, there's an actual Dorothy, and it's all kind of unfolding in front of him. Charlie takes more the 'Hell-o', which is amazing because Felicia plays that great. So yeah, you get a lot of different reactions. Sam's more the business-- 'Okay, didn't expect that, but how do we get down to business and how do we fix the situation we're in?' You get the different layers from all three of us," Ackles said.
This one-off episode will see the characters going off in smaller groups in order to tackle the problem of vanquishing the witch (and then what will they do with Dorothy!?), which provides an opportunity to see a brand new dynamic, as well as a recent favorite one.
"There are parts where we obviously have to split up, and I think Dean and Charlie head one way and Sam and Dorothy head another way, and we kind of get to see into Sam's psyche a little bit because he opens up to Dorothy in ways he wouldn't to Dean or Charlie or Crowley or Kevin or Cas. He gets to kind of tell her things; she's not going to be around week to week, so he's just kind of like 'I'm going to go ahead and level with you', which is nice, we see a nice part of Sam," Padalecki said.
