Get ready for your new favorite episode of Cougar Town-- ever!
Last year, when Cougar Town was still on ABC, we had a chance to ask series showrunner Bill Lawrence if he ever considered doing a flashback episode to showcase how the cul-de-sac crew became as close as they are. His answer then was pretty much that the writers hadn't considered it because they didn't want to seem like they were copying Friends, which famously flashed back time and again, making an icon out of Fat Monica (Courteney Cox). He knew that to do anything similar would draw immediate comparisons.
But wouldn't you know it? It's a season later, and now Cougar Town (on TBS) is delivering that special flashback episode entitled "Flirting with Time," in which we see Jules (Cox) and Bobby (Brian van Holt), still married, just buying the house and moving onto the block and into Andy (Ian Gomez) and Ellie's (Christa Miller) lives.
“On Scrubs, I said I didn’t necessarily think J.D. and Elliot needed to end up together, and then all the writers tortured me, and we’d fight about it. [This] was the same thing. It’s a fourth year show, and everybody said it would be fun to see Courteney—because when Courteney has a glass of wine, her ‘y’alls’ come out and stuff, so were like ‘Let’s do it and make fun of her redneck-y accent!’ I didn’t champion it, but I thought it was really funny,” Lawrence said to LA TV Insider Examiner when we caught up with him in Los Angeles.
Well, we'd like to take a little credit for championing the idea, too, and we're happy to report that Lawrence and Co. have certainly created their own soon-to-be-classic episode here not only by creating Hillbilly Jules but also by tying the theme of the episode together with "meet cutes."
The trip down memory lane is inspired by the fact that Jules desperately wants a "meet cute" story with Grayson (Josh Hopkins) now that the two are married, but she is convinced everyone else has one but her. Over the course of the episode, we flash back to see everyone else's-- even the friendship first impressions that don't start out so cute at all (Ellie and Jules were actually kind of antagonistic with each other! Laurie and Travis' age difference really shows itself when he's just entered into his teens!). And of course it turns out that Jules and Grayson have a pretty sweet first encounter, too, even if it's a simple moment.
Cougar Town airs on Tuesday nights at 10 p.m. on TBS. "Flirting with Time" airs on February 19th 2013.
