Okay, I'm just going to come out and say it: I am completely torn over Community season four.
On the one hand, I want to love it so much because I love Greendale, and I love this crazy study group, but on the other hand, NBC appears to be doing everything possible to make it hard to love it. Yes, the show is tonally different inherently within each episode because it is under new management, so to speak, but airing episodes out of their proper order is not helping the matter! And the next all-new episode, "Alternative History of the German Invasion" mixes both of these continuity-screwing elements in what I fear may be the worst possible way.
"Alternative History of the German Invasion" was-- is-- episode 402. It will come after "History 101" on the eventual DVD release. And it makes sense to follow such an episode, because in it, the gang begins their European History class after losing out in registration for "The History of Ice Cream." They meet their new professor, Noel Cornwallis (Malcolm McDowell), but also, they re-encounter the arrogant German students from last season... Or do they? Here again is a continuity question mark raised by the little the network is releasing to promote the episode.
In season three, when Shirley (Yvette Nicole Brown) and Jeff (Joel McHale) played foosball, we met an obnoxious German student played by funny man Nick Kroll. He carried around soccer balls just to do bits; he was loud and hogged the game; he was the smaller man in the end, when Shirley and Jeff walked away as friends, rather than letting competitiveness rip them apart or trash talk someone else into peeing his pants. But this time, it appears there's a new German in town.
The Office's "boom guy," Chris Diamantopoulos guest stars in "Alternative History of the German Invasion" as Dieter. Alex Schemmer flanks him as Karl, one of his blond sidekicks. What happened to Kroll!?
"Alternative History of the German Invasion" also sees the return of Chang (Ken Jeong) to campus, the Dean (Jim Rash) in a sexy nurse costume...in jail, and Greendale's version of Oktoberfest (not Pop-N-Locktoberfest, but the regular celebration). So that means sexy costumes for Britta (Gillian Jacobs) and Annie (Alison Brie), too, mugs of beer, and soft pretzels. All of which you can see in our photo preview for the episode above.
Community airs on NBC on Thursday nights at 8 p.m. "Alternative History of the German Invasion" airs on February 28th 2013.
