The First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama had a special job on Monday night during the BET Honors 2012. Instead of giving a great speech on behalf of the country, she shared insight about one of the recipients of the night, Dr. Maya Angelou. It was a heartfelt speech that allowed the audience to briefly understand the friendship between the two women and honor the elder poet with a special moment on stage.
"That is the magic of Maya Angelou. That she combines that other worldly genius with a spirit that is so firmly and fully human,” said Michelle Obama on stage at the BET Honors. “That is what Maya does. She lifts us out of our everyday day lives and makes us belief we can do anything.”
The speech continued as Ms. Obama described the efforts of Dr. Angelou and shared just how much she personally respected the BET Honors recipient. After her speech was concluded, Dr. Angelou was given her award and shared a few words as well.
It definitely is a rare sight to see First Lady Michelle Obama on stage presenting an award, but the occasion was special. Not only was there a personal connection, the BET Honors always strive to find unique presenters that offer the audience perspectives alternate than typical award shows. Looking lood in her red gown and talking passionately about Maya Angelou, it appears that it was a perfect choice.
