First Lady Michelle Obama is on the August 2011 Better Homes and Gardens cover

Meryl Gordon wrote about Michelle Obama's healthy lifestyle in the August 2011 Better Homes and Gardens special feature, "Growing Strong." Better Homes and Gardens is available in St. Paul where most women's magazines are sold.

Michelle Obama has planted a vegetable garden in the backyard at The White House. The produce harvested is prepared to eat at The White House and is donated to shelters.

Michelle promotes exercising with her Let's Move campaign because children have become more sedentary. She and her husband, President Barack Obama, exercise regularly, and she has taught her two daughters how to make nutritious food choices. Some tips listed in the article to get kids to eat vegetables include:

1. adding vegetables to foods kids like, such as pizza and sandwiches;

2. being creative when serving vegetables;

3. planting a garden and visiting farmers markets; and

4. letting kids try all kinds of vegetables.
