First Friday of 2013 in Bakersfield

The first Friday of every month, downtown Bakersfield is a veritable cornucopia of arts. At 19th and Eye Streets, artists of all kinds are invited to set up their tables or displays and participate in First Fridays in Bakersfield, selling everything from one-of-a-kind canvas and scultptures, to painted rocks, to repurposed jewelry and objets d'art, to cards and ceramics - all from local artists, artisans, and craftspeople.

Bundle up, because it does get chilly from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. - but chances are there will be some live music and definitely there are restaurants and coffee shops to stop in and refuel as you wander the different tables and stalls.

Most of the artists accept credit or debit cards, but ask first, so you are not disappointed if you failed to bring enough cash for something that catches your fancy.

If you are an artist, you can get a copy of the guidelines for participating in the First Friday's by emailing a request to don@themetrogalleries.com. The spaces are first come, first set-up except for the areas in front of the Bakersfield Art Association - where you must be a member of the association to use that space. It is courtesy to ask the shop keepers before setting up, and not to block egress. Also, bring a lamp, lantern or candles for your table after dark, and you may want to bring a throw or blanket to keep warm while you sit.

I highly recommend marking your calendars for First Fridays in Bakersfield, the art changes every time, and you never know when that perfect piece might be there! Plus it supports our local businesses and artists, and is a kid friendly and pet friendly way to spend an evening - a win for all!
