For the first time, fitness DVDs designed specifically for Muslim women will be available for home exercisers, announced Yahoo Lifestyle on October 31.
The creator of the workouts, which will have concealing clothing rather than the typical fitness DVD leotard, emphasized that she's not seeking to make a point about the Muslim religion. She designed the new workout DVDs to provide all women with the opportunity to feel better about their bodies and enhance their health.
“We're not saying we're inferior or superior [because of hijab]. It's all about the inner," said personal trainer and fitness DVD producer Nadine Abu Jubara, who is based in the United States.
Nadine noted that the new fitness DVD will feature a woman wearing a hijab who reveals only her bare face and hands. The workout begins with an Islamic phrase that means "In the name of Allah, the most Gracious, the most Merciful."
The fitness DVD is designed to follow Islamic rules about attire.
“From an Islamic standpoint we have different rules and regulations about what you can and can't see,” Nadine told reporters. “We wanted her [the instructor] to be covered but we wanted to show she had a six-pack and guns. You can tell she's an expert in her field. That's what we want people to strive to emulate.”
Nadine was motivated to develop the fitness DVD when she lost weight and could not find any appropriate exercise videos to use for herself.
“Our cultures revolve around food and there's no help for anyone trying to better their lifestyle. I'm of Palestinian Arab descent and we love our couscous and biryani," she explained.
In addition to the fitness DVD, Nadine contributed to a children's book: "Healthy Happy Little Muslims" (click for details). Her LinkedIn profile describes her as the "Executive Director of a Non-Profit Health and Fitness Organization."
