Fatal motorcycle accident in Volusia Saturday first of 2013

A 25-year old man was killed Saturday in the first fatal motorcycle accident this year in Volusia County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. FHP spokesperson Sgt. Kim Montes says the name of the victim is being withheld until relatives are notified. Troopers say the bike was northbound on Old Dixie Highway near Pumphouse Road “…at a high rate of speed” around 3:15 Saturday afternoon. The FHP says the biker had passed a northbound vehicle and was in the process of passing another when he lost control of the bike and overturned. The motorcycle then ran into a tree, and the driver was thrown from the bike into a ditch along the west shoulder of the road. The FHP says the driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and had been wearing a helmet.
