The rock band, The Refusers, was started by a Bainbridge Island father 10 years after his infant daughter died from a Hepatitis B vaccine. Michael Belkin's daughter, Lyla, died a day after receiving the Hepatitis B vaccine 15 years ago and this is the reason Belkin is so passionate on vaccine education and activism. In the song, "Stole My Baby Away" he wails, "That evening, she stopped breathing/Her face turned blue/Oh Lord, her face turned blue."
The Refusers’ album, “First Do No Harm” challenges the medical industry norm by denouncing adverse drug reactions and medical errors that have become one of the largest causes of death in the United States. In a lyric from the band’s single “Do You Want A Flu Shot”, Belkin emphatically answers “N.O.” and warns of “Big harm from Big Pharma.”
The Refusers use rock, funk, reggae and blues to spread their message and perform protest songs tinged with humor, satire and biting lyrics. Their music is powered by growling guitar, pounding drums, slapping bass and catchy hooks and their sound is hard-driving, accessible, informative, and addictive. The band is raising consumer awareness about the medical industry-sponsored chemical assault on our bodies and is, "inspiring fans to seize control back from the autopilot thought control system promoted by the mainstream media’s puppet masters."
