First class upgrades on American Airlines & US Airways

American Airlines and US Airways will offer reciprocal first class upgrades beginning June 11, 2014 reported USA Today on June 9, 2014.

Elite members of American Airlines frequent flyer program will have the opportunity to upgrade to first class when flying on US Airways. When flying on American Airlines, elite members of US Airways frequent flyer program will have the opportunity to upgrade to first class.

American Airlines AAdvantage elite members and one companion can upgrade to first class on US Airways operated flights for free. Upgradable operated US Airways flights included flights between the United States and the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, the Caribbean, Central American, and Mexico reported the Australia Business Traveller on June 10, 2014.

However, first class upgrades for elite American Airlines AAdvantage members flying on US Airways to Hawaii will not be offered. Elite American Airlines AAdvantage members flying to Hawaii and wishing to upgrade to first class would still have the opportunity to upgrade to first class on American Airlines operated flights to Hawaii.

The opportunity to upgrade will be offered to American Airlines elite members 24 hours before their US Airways flight. Upgrades will be offered on a first come, first served basis. It is recommended that elite members check in early for the best chance of getting upgraded. If the upgrade request doesn’t clear at the time of request, members will be placed on the airline standby upgrade list.

US Airways Dividend Miles elite members can upgrade to first class on American Airlines operated flights between the United States and the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, the Caribbean, Central American, and Mexico. Unlike, their elite counterparts on American Airlines, Elite Dividend Miles members will be able to upgrade to first class on American Airlines operated flights to Hawaii.

US Airways Chairman’s Preferred elite status members can upgrade for free on American Airlines operated flights. US Airways Silver, Gold, and Plaintum members will pay $30 per 500 miles to upgrade.
