The Choptank Bridge Swim is slated for Saturday, May 10 in the Choptank River. Swimmers will cross the river between Cambridge and Trappe in Maryland.

The Columbia Triathlon Association, Inc. of Columbia, Maryland, or TriColumbia, is sponsoring the first such swim, which starts at 10 a.m. It runs --- or should we say swims -- till about 2:15 p.m. The association expects that about 250 swimmers will compete in a choice of a 3.6-mile or 1.6- mile race in open water.

The shorter event starts at the Choptank River Fishing Pier State Park on the Talbot County side of the Choptank River and winds up on the beach at the Dorchester County Visitor's Center.

Those competing in the longer swim will start at the Hyatt Regency Cambridge on the south side of the river, swim two miles north to the park and then follow the course of the shorter swim.

The World Open Water Swimming Association sanctioned the event.

The Coast Guard plans to restrict boat traffic in the area during the event.

Registration costs $60 before April 30; $85 thereafter. The price includes a post-swim lunch for athletes.
