NYC - Hosted February 17, 2012 by A Mile in My Shoes, The First Annual Real Love Concert celebrates the beauty of our humanity and individuality. Through personal video testimonials and live performances by dynamic singers and spoken-word artists, it highlights the journey to Real Love - a love that can only be found within.
Focusing this year on women and the LGBT community, the Real Love Concert was conceived with the belief that focusing on self-love, self-respect and a positive self-image is central to the betterment of society. The concert on February 17, 2012 and features Crystal Monee Hall, David Brian Colbert, Ken Alston, Jr., Shira Erlichman, and Baron. Baron is an electro/hip-hop recording artist based in New York City. Diversely inspired by an eclectic taste of music styles, Baron's powerful vocals and songwriting talents creates a phenomenal mix on his album "Celebrity". At a young age, Baron channeled his outlandish imagination into music, poetry, and a love for writing. In 2003 Baron moved from his hometown of Newark, NJ to the bright lights of NYC to pursue his passion for the arts, and break into the entertainment industry. Baron is the winner of the Velocity Magazine Award for Best Alternative Artist (2008), Award for Creativity in the 2010-2011 Nations United Awards, and 2010 Out Music Award for Best Hip-Hop Song on his collaboration with fellow artist Infinite.
No stranger to film, Baron has appeared in the movie 'Finding Me' directed by Roger Omeus and 'Afterparty Babies' directed by Henry Cruz while dually having his music showcased in the films. Continuing to deliver provocative music that keeps his fans wanting more, Baron embarks on yet another powerful journey with a new release slated later this year.
Crystal Monee Hall performed with Disney Entertainment and with both the
National Tour and Broadway productions of the Tony-Award winning musical RENT, Ms. Hall turned her eye to full-time scoring and songwriting. Her work has been presented at Rivers of Honey, The Laurie Beechman Theatre's "After Party," The Triad Theatre's "Just a Piano" series hosted by Lee Summers, The LGBT Community Center's Poets and Playwrights Series, and countless venues, including Joe's Pub, Yoshi's San Francisco, and the Napa Valley Opera House. Last spring, NYC choreographer Camille A. Brown & Dancers debuted a new piece set to Ms. Hall's original blues music at The Joyce SoHo, entitled "One Second Past the Future". Currently, Ms. Hall is touring with Concord recording artist Spencer Day as a featured vocalist, and recording her debut album to be released by 2010.
David Brian Colbert is a native of North Carolina who went to writing lyrics to techno/disco songs for the Italian record label, Dance Works Attacks, a division of MCA, while singing with the Corale Pisano, a professional chorus in Pisa, Italy. His musical, Eltinge, received its first public reading at the Woodstock Fringe Festival in 2009. As an
actor, he has traveled the country for several years in the title role of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. This show has won him numerous awards, including the Barrymore Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Musical.
Colbert recently received his third Mac Nomination as one of the Technical Directors at the Laurie Beechman Theatre in Manhattan. As a vocalist, he has performed with Peter Nero and the Philadelphia Pops and received the Mac Award and the New York City Nightlife Award. Colbert is on the Town Hall Concert Series Recordings of Broadway Unplugged Vol. 6 and Broadway By The Year 1928 as well as the City Theater Cast Recording of Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
Kenneth D. Alston, Jr., a native of Bronx, N.Y., sings with a voice hailed by The Baltimore Sun as "Heart-piercingly beautiful." His vocal range spans five octaves and is leading him to pioneer opportunities not only for himself but for performers across the globe. In June 2007, Alston broke ground in Beijing, China, as he arranged and directed the music for the international premiere of the play Passages of Martin Luther King. He and four other singers became the first African-Americans to perform on a stage in China with Chinese actors.
The performance included China's most elite actors of stage, film and television. That performance followed Alston's accompaniment of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra in summer 2006, as soloist for Porgy and Bess during the International Prague Proms Series in Prague, Czech Republic. Later in 2006, he debuted with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra and its Gospel Christmas performance.
Shira Erlichman is a musician who has shared the stage with the likes of Ani Difranco, Spilljoy Ensemble, and poet Buddy Wakefield. Her chopbook, "Advertisement for a Human Being" was nominated for the Pushcart Prize, Best of the Small Presses Series. Her poetry was featured in NARAL's national pro-choice campaign Free. Will. Power, as well as an 'Open Door Poetry' on Border's Bookstore Website.
