At the historic A.M. Booth's Lumberyard (108 Cleveland Ave NW, Huntsville) on Thursday, October 10 at 6 p.m., Free the Hops will bring a new beer event to the people of Huntsville with Pro Bono Brews, a casual food a beer pairing to benefit the Madison County Volunteer Lawyers Program.
Pro Bono Brews is a fundraiser to promote local craft beer and support the work of the Madison County Volunteer Lawyers Program (MCVLP). In Alabama today, over 940,000 people live in poverty. At least one out of four of these people has legal problems, but cannot afford legal representation. The mission of the MCVLP is to promote equal access to justice through the delivery of pro bono legal services to low income citizens in Madison County and to promote volunteerism among Madison County attorneys. The MCVLP is made up of over 340 volunteer attorneys in the Madison County area. The MCVLP accepts clients who are residents of Madison County or who have cases pending in Madison County court, and generally have a household income of no greater than 125% of the federal poverty guidelines. Proceeds from Pro Bono Brews will go to aid the MCVLP in their mission.
The bulk of Pro Bono Brews will comprise of a craft beer tasting featuring some of the best locally produced beers in the state. The following 13 Alabama breweries will be serving up the regular offerings we all love and even some limited batches of brew we all yearn for:
- Avondale Brewing Co. (Birmingham)
- Back Forty Beer Company (Gadsden)
- Below the Radar Brewhouse (Huntsville)
- Blue Pants Brewery (Madison)
- The Brew Stooges (Huntsville)
- Cahaba Brewing Company (Birmingham)
- Fairhope Brewing Company (Fairhope)
- Good People Brewing Company (Birmingham)
- Old Black Bear Brewing Company (Huntsville)
- Rocket Republic Brewing Company (Huntsville)
- Salty Nut Brewery (Huntsville)
- Straight to Ale (Huntsville)
- Yellowhammer Brewing (Huntsville)
To make sure no one goes hungry, Anaheim Chili and Sugar Belle Truck Cupcakes will be on site to offer food pairings for these tasty libations. The night of brews will end with the first Pro Bono Cup, an award given to the favorite brewery of the evening as chosen by the guests in attendance.

Sorry about the late notice on my part, but this truly is going to be a great event for a very worthy cause. You cannot beat it for the price, so make sure to grab your tickets today. Prost!
AWESOME BONUS INFO: One name that should be jumping out at you on the brewery list is Fairhope Brewing Company. Their beers do not make it out of South Alabama too often, so this truly is a treat for the people of Huntsville. I have also been told by Dan Murphy of Fairhope Brewing that their Painted Black IPA will turn up on local taps at Wish You Were Beer, Below the Radar, Liquor Express, and hopefully a few other locations. This is for a limited time only and all thanks to the Pro Bono Brews event. Make sure to take advantage of this opportunity and sample some Fairhope brews while they are available!
