First annual "Paws for Pink" campaign

While this may not be something directly involving doggy health, this is something that can’t be missed.  October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and two impressive and wonderful groups have partnered together to raise money for breast cancer research and community outreach programs.  Dogtopia is a full service dog day care, spa and boutique that has partnered with the Susan G. Komen for the Cure.  Dogtopia was founded in 2002 and there are 22 locations in 11 states.  Komen for the Cure, founded in 1982 by Nancy G. Brinker in honor of her sister Susan, is the world’s largest breast cancer organization.  It is the largest source of nonprofit funds donated for this cause with nearly $1.5 billion invested to date.  They have joined together for the first annual “Paws for Pink” campaign.

There are people all over the world who, at the very least, probably know someone that has fought with breast cancer.  It could have been a loved one, a friend, a friend’s loved one, or even a friend of a friend!  “It’s difficult to find anyone who hasn’t been personally affected by breast cancer, whether themselves, family, friends or co-workers,”said Amy Nichols, CEO and Founder of Dogtopia. “A number of our locations have participated on the local level for the annual Komen Race for a Cure, so we decided to hold this system-wide event because it’s such a worthy cause.”

Dogtopia in Waco is planning to pamper prim dogs throughout the month of October with 10% of the proceeds being donated to Koman of the Cure.  Every canine who comes in to get a spa bath or a nail trim will receive a pink bandana and a Dogtopia Frisbee.  Each customer will be entered for a drawing for a “pink toys with treats” basket.  Pink Dogtopia tees will also be available for sale with 10% of the proceeds going to Komen for the Cure.

On October 9, Dogtopia Waco will be holding a fun off-the-leash Indoor Dog Park.  Cost is $15 for newcomers to Dogtopia and $10 for previous customers.  10% of the proceeds will be donated to the cause.  Small dogs (10-25 pounds) will play between 11 am and 1 pm, while large dogs will play between 1 pm and 3 pm.  If you plan on attending, be sure that your dog is current on all vaccinations, including for kennel cough!  There will also be some great things for you to do as well; like the “Tribute Tree” hallway where you can write the name of a loved one that has suffered with breast cancer.

Come on out and support Dogtopia and the Susan G. Koman for the Cure organization in finding a cure for breast cancer!  Waco isn’t that far away from Fort Worth, so take some time off this month and take your dog to Dogtopia to get pampered and primped in support for the fight against breast cancer!  There are three locations for Dogtopia in the state of Texas:  Waco, Austin, and Houston.
