The first annual Guns and Hoses hockey tournament between Tahlequah Police Department and the Tahlequah Fire Department was played Thursday night at the Snowflake Ice Rink in downtown Tahlequah.
It was a nice mild but windy evening for the tournament. After the Zamboni did a few laps around the ice to smooth it out and remove the excess water, the tournament began at 6pm.
The Police and Fire departments played three ten minute periods. In between the kids from the local skate club, got a chance to have their own exhibition game.
As the evening went on, they MC mentioned to the crowd that the tournament was being played to benefit the local food pantry and the donation bucket would be passed to collect donations.
Never has this examiner seen so many fire and police personnel flopping, skidding, doing the splits, on all fours, and head checking into the boards as she did Thursday night.
By the end of the evening, the donations collected for the local food pantry totaled $310, which is great for the first year.
Everyone that came to watch is hoping that they will make this game an annual tradition, it was a great way to spend an hour downtown for as mild of a day it turned out to be. These guys did a great job all in the name of charity, but boy howdy, they are probably sore as can be.
Hopefully next years game will be just as entertaining, if they decide to continue this as a tradition. This examiner knows, she would look forward to seeing this again, it really was quite fun.
Till Next Year. Have a blessed holiday and fabulous new year!
