First aid for heat stroke in cats

See also

It’s a little early to be worrying abut heat stroke; but summer will come fast and cat do enjoy the nice weather very much. It’s good to be prepared if this misfortune should happen to your much loved feline.

First off, eat stroke is a state in which a cat’s body overheats. Cats typically are smart about hot weather, and know to lounge merrily in the shade. But a cat left in a feebly ventilated space such as a car, shed, or attic, even for a shockingly short time, can be exposed to treacherously high temperatures.

Signs of heat stroke include heavy drooling, breathing, and agitation, which then advance to confusion, weakness, and collapse and this very rapidly.

If this calamity should happen, first remove your cat from the heat.

If you can, next take your cat’s rectal temperature

After doing this, set up cooling measures as for fever.

Be sure to seek veterinary care right away, even if your cat seems to recover you’re your excellent, emergency treatment. The unfavorable effects of overheating can develop several hours later.

Just like when treating a fever, do not use ice or even cold water.

It can’t be stressed enough: Never leave your cat unattended in a poorly ventilated space on a hot day, or ever.

Never let it escape your mind: First Aid is the care made available to a sick or injured cat until professional help is possible. True, First Aid does not take the place of good veterinary treatment, but when used correctly, it could make all the difference in the world for both you and your cat.
