With every PS3 firmware update there comes some kind of problem. Most of the time it's usually games freezing or systems bricking due to the update. This time, though, things are slightly different because it's causing a problem for gamers trying to upgrade their HDD. Many PS3 owners have been posting on the official PlayStation forums reporting this error and many have contacted Sony's technical support, but, so far, it's been to no avail.
The problems being reports are the following: PS3 owners are unable to update their system to firmware 3.41, HDD upgrades aren't being allowed, systems are crashing, and after installing a new HDD the system isn't fully downloading the file and then prompts users with a message stating 'no applicable data found'.
Sony did respond to online inquiries regarding this topic with this response:
"We apologize for any inconvenience you are experiencing with upgrading Internal Hard Disc Drive (for PlayStation®3) on your PlayStation(R)3 computer entertainment system. The information available to our Consumer Services Department does not suggest that this is a problem PlayStation(R) owners are likely to experience when upgrading the HDD with 3.41update. Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) strongly supports the quality of its products and backs them with full confidence.
We ask that you update the previous HDD first to see if the update will go through. Then update from the thumb drive that is formatted in FAT 32 and has the 3.41 update downloaded."
One user notes that they did update the system to 3.41 before upgrading their HDD and the system works fine with the older HDD. Sony hasn't issued an official fix for this problem but has told those who are calling technical support and posting on the forums they are looking into it. We have emailed Sony on this topic and will post an answer as we get one.
Special thanks to Chad for the tip.

Dont forget to mention that the incremental patch (40Mb) downloades directly through the ps3 is the one that works fine. It seem the complete package from the website (167Mb) is the one causing all this troble, and its the one needed to make new HDDs able to work.
Lets hope Sony fixes this fast, they are losing a lot of fans over this.
You sir, are awesome. Thank you so much for posting this. Maybe Sony will start to listen to us.
First time I've heard of this. It must not be widespread or have a different cause the than the firmware. User error maybe. I call B.S. on the topic.
@JonahFalcon
It's not widespread because as far as I know it's only affecting people who are trying to upgrade their hard drive. The fact that there are 26 pages of posts about his on the official US playstation forum (just from the past 2 days) should tell you this isn't user error or BS.
*this/ and I forgot to thank Matt for writing this.
ive got an original phatty with a 320gb HDD. no problems for me.
first ive heard of this problem
This is effecting a lot of people with PS3's that are just trying to update their hard drives. It's not an isolated issue. it's happening to people in Europe, America, Canada, and Austrailia. Thank you Mr. Furtado for helping the people that are stuck with bricked PS3s. Hopefully this will help SONY recognize the problem exists
I have no problem qith the upgrade.. maybe the error resides in the user or the quality in the hdd....
I am glad this is a known problem. I thought I was doing something wrong.
I have the original 20 upgraded to 120 with 0 problems
@fenrir_D: i have the same issue even though i did the automatic update directly from the ps3. don't know whether this was a 40mb or 167mb download though...
all of these problems people are having with there ps3's is just mind boggling to me i dont understand how i have a first gen 60gb with 500gb and i have updated all the time and never ran into any problems knock on wood the only problem i ran into was the dumb removal of the other os they allowed and took away what a sham that was
Thanks for the post.
fix the forum hyperlink in your article ^ - ^
The problem only happens if you tried to upgrade a hard drive in the last three days which you need the 167mb file from the site for. On ones before the July 27 just used the upgraded 40mb one which will work.
To everyone who has no problems: Buy a new HDD and try to put FW 3.41 via USB device on it. Then you'll understand.
Well, I upgraded my HDD a few months ago and when I did It, the system never asked me for a firmware update; although I read that the firmware was necessary after replacing the HDD. I dunno if that was because I made a backup of the old HDD.
I mean, this is what I did:
- made a backup of the old HDD
- got out the old HDD
- got in the new HDD
- started up the PS3, It asked me to format the new HDD and after that, all was in the same conditions in which I left all; even I checked the firmware version and was the same of the old HDD.
- restored the backup file and that´s it. Never asked me for a firmware update.
Maybe if all of you first apply the patch to the old HDD and make a backup file, then change the HDD and restore the backup file could be work.
This issue only affects PS3 models CECHH01 and up, where the OS is NOT installed on the PS3 flash memory. If you install a fresh new HD on a newer model PS3 and attempt to format and install 3.41, the update will not work.
My old hard drive with an OS already on it updated fine, but I bought a fresh new hard drive and could not get it to work! I know for sure I did everything right too, I hate how Sony is treating its customers like idiots.
I did the download through the PS3 on my girlfriends original 80gb with original hdd, never had anything else in it, and it downloaded and installed and then when it restarted itself it shut off. Now all it does when turned on is green light for 4 seconds and then back to solid red light. Been trying to install from thumbdrive in safe mode with no avail. I have contacted customer support twice, the first says it is a hardware issue you may need to send it in, second time the guy said this is weird Sony hasn't said anything about any issues with the update and there isn't anything I can do for you, sending it in won't help because we would do the same things you are doing. I have a original 20gb upgraded to 250gb hdd and I don't even dare try to upgrade it after seeing this crap. YAY SONY!!!
Eu não consigo fazer upgrade do meu HD. E quando coloco Ratched & Clank R2 ele fala que necessita de um espaço de 51 mega no HD, sendo que tenho 120 gigas livre! Quando saíra a correção
EVERYONE-YOU CAN FIX THIS- PRINT OFF THE PLAYSTATION WEBPAGE INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO UPGRADE THE HDD AND SEND IT TO YOUR STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL. THIS IS FRAUD AND DECEPTIVE ADVERTISING. TO GET PS TO FIX IT, YOU NEED A LOT OF COMPLAINTS. IF YOU LOOK AT THE BOOK THAT CAME WITH YOUR CONSOLE, IT ALSO HAS INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO UPGRADE, AS DO A LOT OF SALES ADS. PRINT THEM OFF AND SEND TO THE STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL. JUSTICE FOR ALL!!!
I haven't confirmed it yet but I heard the file has been replaced on the website from the currently 68 page thread on sony's site.
