Fireworks for sale at WalMart stores in RI
Apparently someone was setting off fireworks inside their hotel room and the entire hotel had to be evacuated.
Firefighters were called to the hotel after smoke was reported in the building. Guests were eventually let back into their rooms at the Comfort Inn on Post Road near the TF Green Airport, but not until fire officials gave the go-ahead.
With the Fourth of July only weeks away and the bill signed into law, local WalMart stores are already showcasing large packages of fireworks including sparklers and other ground based fireworks, in the front of their stores.
The bill does not legalize bottle rockets or firecrackers. Parental supervision required for anyone under 16 using the permitted fireworks. Previous to the signing of the bill, Rhode Island was one of only five states that totally ban fireworks of all types.
What fireworks are legal in Rhode Island? Read details of the bill that was signed into law by Governor Carcieri here.
How dangerous are fireworks? The latest statistics from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates that in 2008 about 7,000 people were treated in hospital emergency rooms for injuries associated with fireworks.
More than half the injuries were burns and most of the injuries involved the hands, eyes, and legs. Those ranging in age from15 to 19 years old had the highest injury rate among all age groups.
