Firestone Walker debuts in Philly at Monk’s Café

Philadelphia landed another world class brewery recently, attracting Firestone Walker Brewing Company all the way from Paso Robles, California. Of course, their initial debut was held by none other than the famous Monk’s Café on the corner of 16th and Spruce Street, as they welcomed in their award winning brewers with open arms on April 11 at 5 p.m. Bar owner Tom Peters and co-owner of Firestone Walker, David Walker were both on hand to greet the guests, explain the beers, and describe the elaborate tasting menu to the thirsty beer fans who packed the bar.

Three different beers were flowing through the lines at Monk’s, including Walker’s Reserve (porter), Double Jack (imperial IPA), and Abacus (bourbon barrel aged barleywine), with their anniversary blend, Fourteen also available in 22 ounce bottles. Each was completely unique, allowing attendees the opportunity to sample an excellent cross section of the brewery’s impressive portfolio.

While all of the brews were delicious, Abacus was the clear standout of the evening, boasting an extraordinary flavor profile enhanced by great usage of the bourbon barrel aging process. As a new addition to their lineup, the bourbon character wasn’t too overwhelming on the senses but still inherently present at a whopping 13% alcohol. Rich malts, notes of chocolate and caramel, and an earthy booze presence rendered this a memorable beer which left most people immediately wanting more.

Peters and company also laid out a delicious spread of complimentary food, with each dish specifically created and chosen to pair with the available beers. Two gourmet cheeses along with fresh bread were set out, one intended for Abacus and the other for Double Jack. A fresh shrimp dish was also prepared along with tender, mouthwatering lamb chops in a demiglaze created with Firestone Walker Fourteen. The supply of food and beer seemed to be almost endless, as the staff continued to refill the bread baskets, platters, and tulip glasses throughout the event.

People filtered in and out of the room throughout the evening, each getting their fill of Firestone Walker’s beer while sampling some of the restaurant’s delicious offerings. Bottles of Double Jack and Abacus were also available to purchase at a fairly reasonable price, as people quickly snapped them up to bring home and enjoy later on. Even better, with only 1500 cases of Abacus produced, this was an excellent opportunity to grab a bottle without having to hunt them down at various bottle shops throughout the area.

Monk’s was right on target once again, and welcomed yet another world class brewery to their city in style, leaving everyone full and satisfied. A number of Firestone Walker beers are already available in New Jersey, including Double Jack, Fourteen, and Abacus, so don’t hesitate to grab a bottle or two if you happen to see them lurking on store shelves.
