As runners in Central Virginia look for ways to fill their late summer and early fall running calendars, a new race will take place on Aug. 24.
Online registration is still open for the Fireman's 5k, which will be held at Forest Volunteer Fire Department's Company 5 at 1645 Thomas Jefferson Drive on Saturday at 8 a.m.
The inaugural race will benefit the Forest Volunteer Fire Department and Jefferson Forest Lacrosse Team. To date, nearly 200 runners and walkers have registered online for the event.
In addition to the Fireman's 5k, there will also be a Junior Firefighter Mile, held at 9 a.m. All Junior Firefighter Mile participants will receive a medal.
In the 5k, there will be awards for the top three men and women overall and for the top three in each age group. Packet pickup will be held on Thursday, Aug. 22, at the Forest Volunteer Fire Department for those who have registered online.
Race day registration will take place from 7:00 to 7:30 a.m. on Saturday. The start and finish for the course will be at Fire Company 5.
The Forest Volunteer Fire Department has responded to 283 fires in 2013, with an average of nearly 40 responses per month. Volunteer fire fighters receive no pay for their service to the community.
According to the fire department's website, the Forest Volunteer Fire Department was organized in 1957 and chartered in 1958.
The Forest Lacrosse Club was started in the fall of 2010 to offer a competitive lacrosse program for Jefferson Forest High School lacrosse players.
Both the boys and girls Forest Lacrosse Club teams are highly competitive. The teams are transitioning toward being sanctioned school teams in 2014 with the passing of the Bedford County Club Sports Policy.
Just as the athletes have worked hard, so have parents and supporters of the program. Through donations and various fundraisers which have been held, the teams are preparing to break ground on their new game field.
Whether you're planning to run in the Virginia 10 Miler or just want to support a good cause, the Fireman's 5k is a great way to start the weekend.
