Firefighters save man and woman with reports of shots fired

Firefighters and police rescued a man and woman from their burning apartments amid reports of an active shooter on Thursday in Bridgeport, CT.

When the fire fighters first arrived on scene, they saw a woman hanging from a third story window. The son's whereabouts were not immediately known.

Firefighters and officers along with the National Guard responded to the scene after they received reports of gunshots, according to NBC Connecticut.

Crews rescued a woman from her third-floor apartment.

Another man was rescued from the second-floor after he suffered second-degree burns. He is currently hospitalized in critical condition. Neighbors told reporters that they suspect the son has mental issues.

Officials say that after investigating, it appears there was no gun at the scene. A resident who called in earlier said he heard several pops when the fire started, but officials have not been able to corroborate that.

Reports of this type are taken very seriously. On Dec 24th, four firefighters were shot and two of them killed when they responded to a house fire in Webster, NY. That fire was intentionally set and the killer, William Spengler, 62, a paroled murderer, waited in ambush for the first responders to arrive.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
