Firefighters help to rescue Scottsdale dog stuck in tortoise den

No one has been able to figure out why Sam, a 14-year-old Labrador retriever would be smelling around a tortoise den, but apparently that sensitive nose got Sam into trouble when she became trapped.

The Scottsdale, Ariz. pooch had been missing for hours on Jan. 21 when her family finally found her, but no matter what they tempted Sam with, the dog wasn't budging out of that hole.

According to kpho.com, the family called for help, and out came firefighters and policemen from Scottsdale and Phoenix as well as the Arizona Humane Society Emergency Medical Technicians to aid with the rescue.

It took about an hour and a half to dig around the den in order for one of the rescue team to climb into the hole and pull Sam safely out. Firefighters administered oxygen to the exhausted and scared pooch, but otherwise she is reported to have survived her adventure with no serious injuries.
