Dozens of firefighters were on scene battling a blaze that broke out late Wednesday morning inside the Indoor Sports Complex at Stony Brook University, college officials confirmed.
Just before 11:30 a.m., calls began coming in to the Setauket Fire Department reporting a structural fire at the Indoor Sports Complex on John S. Toll Road on the grounds of Stony Brook University. When fire officials arrived on the scene, they discovered foam and insulation burning in the building and called for additional firefighters.
Emergency crews from Setauket, Stony Brook, Port Jefferson, Terryville and Centereach were all called to the scene to help extinguish the burning insulation. Around 11:51 a.m., officials reported that the main body of the fire had been knocked out.
A university spokesperson did not immediately return a request for comment on the fire, but University Police sent an emergency alert to the campus community, which read in part, “The construction related fire at the Indoor Sports Complex is currently under control. There are no reported injuries at this time. Emergency responders are on scene. Please stay clear of the area.”
Sources at the scene said construction workers may have been responsible for starting the fire, but that information could not be immediately confirmed. Students and staff reported seeing bellowing smoke from across the campus and multiple campus administrators headed to the scene, sources said.
As of this writing, multiple fire departments remain at the scene and the fire has not yet been considered cleared.
