A fired Walmart worker was offered his job back after being sacked for coming to the aid of a woman being physically abused in a Walmart parking lot. Kristopher Oswald, 30, had been employed for a little less than two months at a Michigan Walmart in the Livingston County town of Hartland when he decided to intervene between a group of men and a woman who was being accosted in the parking lot. For his “Good Samaritan” efforts, the big box store fired him.
With social media erupting and Walmart’s PR tanking, Fox News is reporting today that an offer from Walmart is on the table to “welcome him back,” a company spokesperson said.
Oswald, who was working the overnight shift last Sunday, was taking his lunch break at 2:30 a.m. in the parking lot when he heard the commotion and screams of a woman. Getting out of his car, he ran over and saw a man jumping on the hood of a woman’s car as she attempted to flee her assailant.
The deranged man turned on Oswald as he approached, attacking and punching him, yelling, “I'm going to kill you!” recounts Oswald.
The plucky employee held his own, managing to pin down the man, but was then jumped from behind by the two other men. Police arrived shortly thereafter and the men were arrested.
Livingston County sheriff’s deputies arrested 17-year-old Dillon Tierney and charged him with assault and drunk driving. Tierney’s two friends were released after being questioned.
A few days later, Oswald was fired for “violating” company policy.
“After a violation of company policy on his lunch break, it was determined to end his temporary assignment… We had to make a tough decision, one that we don’t take lightly, and he’s no longer with the company,” company spokeswoman Ashley Hardie said at the time.
Walmart has since reversed their position, no doubt because of getting hammered in social media circles and taking a severe hit to their image.
Will Oswald accept his position back? Fox News reports he is unsure.
