“More States Allowing Guns in Bars,” The New York Times reported back in 2010, eliciting the expected “Wild West” analogies the hoplophobes always seem to drag up whenever the people actually seek to exercise their right to keep and bear arms.
“That’s not cool in my book,” Art Andersen, 44, said as he nursed a Coors Light at Sam’s Sports Bar and Grill near Vanderbilt University. “It opens the door to trouble. It’s giving you the right to be Wyatt Earp.”
Somebody ought to tell the nursing Mr. Andersen to put the damn beer down. What is it about sports bars and Wyatt Earp? And as for the assumption that latter day Wyatt Earps are the “only ones” we can trust with guns:
That is simply not borne out. Just ask drunken feral pig Anthony Abbate (see sidebar video player), taking advantage of Chi-Town citizen disarmament edicts to beat the hell out of a woman less than half his size. Talk about a violent, cowardly sociopath who deserved to be shot, often, and by someone who knows how.
But don’t expect that to change the minds of bigoted restaurateur Randy Rayburn, or bartender Jack Lauterback, who promises to put your “face…in the pavement”if you walk into his bar armed.
Tough guy here serves up the sauce in Virginia, where, despite his apparent inclination to resolve his personal issues of ignorance and paranoia with violence (or threats of it, anyway), one group has proven itself remarkably peaceable. From the Richmond Times-Dispatch:
Virginia's bars and restaurants did not turn into shooting galleries as some had feared during the first year of a new state law that allows patrons with permits to carry concealed guns into alcohol-serving businesses…The number of major crimes involving firearms at bars and restaurants statewide declined 5.2 percent from July 1, 2010, to June 30, 2011, compared with the fiscal year before the law went into effect…
I trust no regular readers find this news surprising…? Aside from the hoplophobes for whom facts don't matter?
