Fire in South Carolina destroyed many homes

On March 17, 2013 a small wildfire spread rapidly and relentlessly to destroy condos in the Windsor Green neighborhood in Horry County, South Carolina near Conway, South Carolina.

A red alert burning ban had been issued hours before this fire broke out. A red flag alert strongly suggests all burning be put off until the ban is lifted. Dry conditions and strong wind gusts create conditions for a fire to spread very quickly.

In the Windsor Green neighborhood in Horry County, South Carolina, 108 condo units were burned to the ground. Several other condo units were damaged. The American Red Cross has established a hotline phone number for those that need assistance with housing, food, clothing and medication. That number is 843-477-0020.

In Loris, South Carolina the historic Allsbrook-Rankin house burned to the ground on March 17, 2013. This old home had been used for weddings in the past. An 8,000- square-foot house it was located at 701 South Highway just south of Loris, South Carolina.

Just across the border in Calabash, North Carolina a small strip mall burned during the night of March 18, 2013. All businesses were a total loss. The fire started in the Bistro & Pub and quickly engulfed other shops which included the Head Hunter Barber Shop, Calabash Florist and Reflections Stained Glass.
