In the early morning hours of March 26th, 2014, firefighters in the Mars Hill NC district responded to a fire at Wolf Ridge Ski Resort. When they arrived the entire upper main lodge was engulfed in flames, as they fought to contain the flames, the entire building collapsed. Cold temperatures and icy roads hampered the attempt to extinguish the flames. No one was inside the lodge at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.

Wolf Ridge Ski Resort is a popular destination for winter sports in North Carolina, and the lodge was a popular venue for weddings, receptions and other events. Scheduled events that were to have taken place at the lodge have been cancelled. The lower lodge was not damaged.

Investigators have stated the cause of the fire was impossible to determine due to the total destruction of the building, however the Madison County Sheriff's Department has an ongoing investigation.
