Fire at apartment building forces mother to throw children out window

A fire at an apartment building in Yonkers, New York forced a mother to do the unthinkable: To throw her children out the window. The woman felt that she had no other choice but to throw her 3-year-old twin girls out the window into the arms of a relative below when a fire broke out in her home.

The rest of the family jumped out the second story window also, avoiding the heavy smoke and blazing flames. The mother broke her leg while her teenage daughter suffered a head wound and a broken foot. The babies were both okay.

After firefighters put out the fire and assessed the situation, they informed the family that they could have exited the home through a back door. It is believed that the thick smoke clouded the path to the easier escape route -- but the family is thankful to be alive regardless.

As for how the fire started, police do not suspect it was accidental. Arson is being considered and police are still investigating.
