The Finns are infamous of having their own individual style and design hitting the runway at Fashion Week Brooklyn 2014 Finnish brand WAVE by Marita Huurinainen is showing the world just that. I caught with the designer in Brooklyn for FWB 2014 and here's what she had to say.

Getthebuzz716: Tell me a little about your brand. Where are you from?

Maritahuurinainen: We are from Finland – a small place up North. The Finns are famous for individualistic styles, and Finland has long roots in the design field.Being a Finnish actor gives a brand a unique tough. In WILD collection we are using fur and skin of the animals that have been born and lived in their natural environment in Finnish wilderness. WAVE collection is using Finnish wood materials in its bended wooden sandals.

Getthebuzz716: What does fashion week Brooklyn mean to you?

Maritahuurinainen:: We feel very honored to have been invited to show our collection at Fashion Week Brooklyn. It is the first time that our collections our coming to the US, so this is something very special for us

Getthebuzz716: How would you define your Brand ?

Maritahuurinainen: MH Marita Huurinainen is high quality brand with ecological conscience. Styles are simplistic with always some kind of personal twist.

Getthebuzz716: How long does it usually take you to construct a piece?
The first idea is usually fast, but many of our products need a lot of product development for the materials and methods are not orthodox. Thus the whole process is fairly long.

Getthebuzz716: Describe the general process you go through to design and What's your favorite part about conceptualizing a design?

Maritahuurinainen:After the first ideas and sketches I always need to try things by hand. For clothes I make a three-dimensional image. We also use different materials such as wood and fur, meaning that I am very comfortable sawing my timber in a smithy as well…The best part is when at one of those late hours you realize that it is working, it is working!...

Getthebuzz716:What matters to you most as a designer?

Maritahuurinainen: I say I am looking for a perfect form. A piece should have just enough, but not too much. In good design beauty and functionality are in balance.I also find that designers should carry their responsibility on the choices of production, for example. What to produce, and how to produce.

Getthebuzz716: What do you believe makes a quality design?

Maritahuurinainen: A quality design is something that lasts time. That is in style and materials. Last year, I was surprised to have a request from a magazine use on their cover page an image of a dress that I had made ten years ago. First I thought of it as something embarrassing, but on a second thought, it was quite cool.

Getthebuzz716:How would you define the style your line exemplifies?

Maritahuurinainen:Design dressing. Affordable luxury.

Getthebuzz716:What are some of your fashion goals?

Maritahuurinainen: My goal is that Wave shoes will be someday a classic.

Getthebuzz716: What other experience do you have in the fashion industry (stylist, retail, marketing, etc.)?

Maritahuurinainen:I have worked as a designer in various companies before starting to concentrate to build own products and vision. We have been working as a company from the beginning of the year 2013. Before that I was developing own products at a side of other design work.

Getthebuzz716: What are your favorite patterns/materials [prints] to work with and why?

Maritahuurinainen: I like to work with forms. I create a piece of cloth as a sculpture on the doll. I always start with a blank fabric, and form comes first. A print might be added. I like mostly wool for its formability. I also use other natural materials.
