Like a teenager still trying to figure out the kind of adult he or she wants to be, half-finished plays and songs are bristling with potential. True, both are rougher than the finished versions, bad habits such as rudeness or imprecise characterization not yet smoothed out, but they’re also more daring because they’re not sure yet what they’ll become. At that point, anything seems possible.
Salt Lake audiences will get the chance to see some of that potential at “Broadway Bound?,” coming Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m. to the Rose Wagner Performing Art Center (tickets are available online, but you can also skip the online surgcharge by picking them up at the door the night of the show). The show, presented by the Salty Cricket Composers Collective, gives audiences a glimpse of new and in-progress musicals and operas that are stretching into life right here in Utah. A company of five actors, singers and dancers will present scenes from all of the productions, which will be fully blocked and memorized (no one will have scripts in hand. Sets and costumes will be minimal, but imagination will be in full display.
The audience’s only responsibility is making sure they let their feelings known. Like the guidance counselor who gently takes a student aside and suggests interpretive dance may not be the wisest choice for their future, these scenes need to get feedback so the people who created them knows what works and what doesn’t.
