Finding shelter on top Springer Mountain (Photos)

Hiking to the top of Springer Mountain in Georgia is a moderate hike for many. Springer Mountain’s elevation is 3,782 feet. This mountain is the start to the 2,176 mile hike to Maine on the Appalachian Trail. The Appalachian Trail ends in Maine at Mount Katahdin, a mountain nearly 5,300 feet in elevation.

Getting to Springer Mountain there are several options, to enhance ones experience with nature choosing the 8+ mile hike from Amicalola Falls State Park is a must. Amicalola Falls is located at 240 AmicalolaFalls State Park Road Dawsonville, GA 30540.

The hiking trail from Amicalola Falls to Springer Mountain is difficult, but most hikers who start out to complete the Appalachian Trail in March begin their trip at this trailhead to Springer Mountain.

An overnight camping exploration at Springer Mountain can be enjoyable to many. Just .2 miles from the summit of Springer Mountain there is a built shelter. The shelter can be found on a blue blazed trail; near this shelter is a backpacking camp site and access to water.

Cables can be found near these sites, which stretch from various trees. These cables are called a bear hang and can be used to extend backpacks and other items to heights where a bear is unable to reach them. An American Black Bear is commonly seen in this area. Be prepared to keep food out of reach, a bear may appear out of nowhere to seek food at night.

Overall a camping exploration can be enjoyable at Springer Mountains; there is shelter, a place to camp for backpackers and a stream where water can be found. Note this water must be purified before drinking.

Springer Mountain is a famous location, a well-known start to the Appalachian Trail, and a place to view the beautiful mountains of North Georgia. Southern Appalachia is not just a region on the map, but a destination for adventure.
