“Finding Mother” by Anne Allen is a contemporary romantic drama set on the beautiful island of Guernsey, part of Britain but nearer the coast of France.
Nicole discovers that her husband has been unfaithful – again – and realises that something has to change in her life. She's had a charmed life until then; a comfortable upbringing as the adopted daughter of an advocate and his wife in Jersey, followed by university and a successful career in radio and television. Although she's known since a child that she was adopted, it had never really figured in her life until now. Perhaps it's time to find out who she really is and tracing her natural mother would help. So Nicole takes time away from her husband and her job and begins a journey that will bring her more than she bargained for. Long-buried secrets – one going back to WWII - are unearthed and lives are irrevocably changed by Nicole's search for self-awareness and knowledge of her 'real' parents.
This is Anne Allen's second novel, following the publication of 'Dangerous Waters' in 2012. Both are set in Guernsey and although not a series, there are links between them. A third book, Guernsey Retreat, is to be published in 2014, part of 'The Guernsey Novels' celebrating both the beauty and history of the island.
“Finding Mother” has ten five-star review on Amazon.
“Tracing a birth parent when you've been adopted is a sensitive subject and Allen handles it well, recognising the insecurities of the adopting parents who wonder if they're going to be supplanted and the worries of the mother who gave up the child soon after her birth. Will she be judged for her relationship with the child's father and for the fact that she made no attempt to bring the child up herself? There's an added complication here in that Nicole will also find out about her birth father - giving her more parents than any girl should decently want! It's neatly, elegantly done and the story is a real page turner." The Bookbag ****
By profession a psychotherapist, Anne has drawn on her extensive professional experience to write her novels and is now focusing on her writing full-time. She's always enjoyed being creative, in the past learning to sculpt, mosaic, paint furniture and renovate houses. One of her homes was a Dutch barge which proved to be quite a challenge!
