After catching Dr. Marion Nestle's rousing talk at the LSU Health Sciences Center, I went upstairs (3rd floor) to get lunch at the cafeteria. It's a cheery, if industrial place, with long picture windows that give you an interesting view of the skyline and I-10.
While I found the usual cafeteria suspects - baked, cheesy pasta and puffed pan pizzas - there were plenty of fresh options. The best deal is a cup of soup, small salad (topped with egg) and a 16-ounce fountain drink for $5.50. When I went, the soup of the day was French onion. It's decent enough - peppery, with savory pieces of onion and no fattening cheese skin on top.
The cafeteria also has an excellent grill, which puts out all sorts of fresh sandwiches and subs. I got a grilled cheese on whole wheat bread with slices of tomato for an astounding $1.50. I liked that the cafeteria also offered pita chips instead of potato. Half a bag of cinnamon-crusted chips sets you back only 100 calories and about 3 grams of fat.
This isn't gourmet food by any stretch, but it's warm and hearty and very well priced. You'll pay a buck an hour or so for parking, but it still comes out a bargain, and you don't have to be a student or professor to take advantage of it.
