'Finding Bigfoot': Local historian says Bristol area may be squatchy

Recently, the popular Animal Planet program, "Finding Bigfoot," aired an episode filmed in the nearby Knoxville, Tenn., area. In the March 3 edition of the Bristol Herald Courier, local historian, Bud Phillips, shared several accounts of Bigfoot sightings in a wooded, mountainous area outside of the city near Abingdon. There was even a skeleton later recovered, thought to be the creature.

Bud Phillips is known to almost everyone as Bristol’s historian; he came here in the 1950’s and has been documenting the rich oral history of the area ever since. Much of the information he gleaned in his younger days was from very old people in the area who remembered events from a long, long time ago.

The broad scope of his knowledge and information is amazing, but the detail in which he delves is even more so. Therefore, when Bud Phillips presents stories of Bigfoot sightings, people pay attention.

The thing that makes his article in Sunday’s newspaper so very compelling is that the stories were from several people regarding the same creature in the same place. He even has a picture of the wooded mountain. On the television program, “Finding Bigfoot,” sometimes they will interview a husband and wife who saw the same thing, but Bud Phillips has documented an event remembered by several people.

Considering his article in light of other information available on the East Tennessee Bigfoot Organization website, it is quite compelling. As they say on “Finding Bigfoot,” Bristol just may be “squatchy!”
